Nothing out of the ordinary here and Kadee usually process the order and forwards the ordered items within 48 hours. (Eureka has the couplers sent to it in Australia and then has the couplers delivered, one way or another to the factory in China. In the good old days there were less problems on items from Australia to China than the US to China but this may no longer be the case and of course hand delivery is currently not an option.)

This delivery issue may be a problem for the future as on the next evening the usual curteous reply was received from Kadee acknowledging the order and pointing out that they had lost six months production last year due to the virus and that they had not been able to catch up yet. With orders coming in as manufacturers started to get production moving again they were six months behind in deliveries and so we cold expect delivery in August or September.

Other manufacturers are reporting similar experiences and there is not much that can be done about it. Actually, this may not hold up projects all that much but it just another thing to be taken into account.

In a similar vein, talk to any retailer and they tell similar stories with regard to major brands from overseas such as Peco, Micro-Engineering etc. so while we may be focused on China it is in fact a world wide problem.

Eureka Modelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06279640144810093938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7734500393709287945.post-39549081217959639512021-04-03T23:49:00.006+11:002021-04-04T10:17:28.585+10:00
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

(The factories in China are gradually getting back to normal)

The recent publication of the latest edition of The Eureka Times (36th edition) started this process and there are a few items that can go up on this blog over the Easter weekend.

Recently, work commenced on the next pair of cars in Eureka's NSWGR 12 wheeler series.

These will be a version of the standard TAM sleeping car in its early appearance with crown lights and tongue and groove siding and available in the early varnished timber livery and a second class sitting car in two variations, the MCE/MCX cars.

All of these are on the order form available from the Eureka office and being distributed with ET36.

As usually happens when a new project is being discussed some interesting information comes to light. THE 12 WHEELER PROGRAM - A LOOK INTO THE CRYSTAL BALL:

With the latest in the 12 wheeler program well underway the factory has asked for details of the next offering in the program.
Eureka staff have already been discussing this and the field has been narrowed down to a couple of candidates.
The first of these is the Commissioner's Train, This would involve three new 12 wheelers, AAH7, AAH8 and AAH9.
The second is another group of two cars, a MBE and a MFE in early configuration including an early under-frame. This uder-frame would allow the production of early series 12 wheelers with crown lights and tongue and grove siding. .

The factory having now produced the NCRs, the MAL/ACS/AB and currently the TAM/MCS is now very experienced at producing 12 wheelers. The result is that the factory is proposing to deliver each new offering in the 12 wheeler program at yearly intervals. This is quite a brisk pace and will involve considerable pressure on both the factory and the Eureka staff. Hopefully both organisations will be up to the task.
One of the reasons for choosing to produce an MCS in our third batch of 12 wheelers as opposed to a CS was so that the car could be delivered in Candy livery as shown in the accompanying photo.
The Eureka MCS will have a different underframe to the car in the photo but MCS 796 and MCS 599 should faithfully capture the prototype for those who like the Candy livery.

The factory has advised that the TAM/MCS tooling has been released to the Injection Shop where squirting will commence. This will take only a few weeks at most and decoration (painting) can then follow. August is the expected delivery date.
The first test shots for the RH cement hopper and steel sided LCH coal hopper have been received by the factory.
The factory has advised that squirting of bits for the 38 class is underway. We reminded the factory that Sanda Kan had made modifications to the nose cone tooling after the first run and we asked the factory to confirm that they were using the the modified nose cone tooling.
The factory supplied the following photograph which clearly shows that it is indeed the modified nose cone.
38 Class Engine Numbers - minor changes:

The announcement of the engine numbers that will be produced in the re-run of the 38s created some discussion and as a result the following changes have been made to the list of engine numbers which will be produced.

3815 will now be produced in black not green as was previously announced.

3822 will replace 3815 in full green with black smoke box door. Eureka Modelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06279640144810093938noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7734500393709287945.post-28678161117600102692018-07-27T16:48:00.002+10:002018-07-27T16:48:17.308+10:00

RH four wheel Cement Hopper - Project Progress Report

The factory has advised that this project and the associated steel hopper LCH project is well under way with tooling of the new hoppers due to be completed in August. This suggests a delivery date sometime in the last quarter of this year.
The factory has requested artwork for the two projects and this has been supplied. (See below.)
Two versions of the RH are being produced in this run. Research indicates that the NSWGR sold these four wheel cement wagons to a number of private companies as indicated below. Photographs from which artwork could be prepared have been located for the Southern Portland Cement company plus of course the original NSWGR version.
As previously advised, these two projects are using LCH underframes surplus from previous productions. This means that both projects will be severely limited in quantity and so only having artwork for one private company together with the NSWGR will fit in with the limited numbers of sets that will be available.
If research turns up more details of the other companies then these may be offered at a later date.
Pre-orders are highly recommended.
C38 Project Update

The factory has advised that it wishes to start the injection process for the 38 class re-run project so that it can carry out the decoration process (painting). This is the most time consuming part of the assembly process and can be carried out whilst the engineering sample is being put together in August.
In order for decoration to be undertaken the artwork must be completed at this end. This is a major task in itself and obviously before the artwork can be completed a final decision must be made on the engine numbers and liveries that are to be produced. This decision has now been made and preparation of the artwork is underway.
The numbers and liveries that will be available are as follows:
40 Class Update:

The 40 class has had a very successful release with Royal Blue versions no longer available and with stocks of Indian Red very low. Reasonable stocks of Green livery are available although some individuals numbers are sold out. Weathered models are also no longer available.

We are still holding some pre-orders having been unable to contact their owners and anyone who has not yet received their models should contact the Eureka Models office.

Preliminary discussions are underway for a second run of 40s (including the Robe River version) but the way the program is at the factory this year it is unlikely that a re-run of 40s even if ordered now would see a delivery before the end of 2019 by which time stocks of the first run are likely to be well and truly exhausted.

Long Lost Tooling Recovered.

In March this year a major step forward for Eureka occurred when tooling for 14 projects which were being held by a manufacturer previously used by Eureka were recovered and transferred to a safe location in Shenzhen.

Two trucks and a forklift were required to move the 39 pallets of tooling to the new location. As can be seen in the accompanying photographs even individual tools require the use of a heavy lift capacity to move them.

The tooling is now being sorted into projects prior to being moved
again to their permanent home at the premises of the manufacturers who are currently being
commissioned to complete the assembly of the projects.

The key projects involved in the process are the VR K class, the VR bogie open and bogie flat wagons, the NTAF bogie petrol tankers and the private owner four wheel hoppers. Discussions to date indicate that delivery of these outstanding items will be complete by the end of 2018.

In addition to the above projects a number of re-runs will now be possible given the retrieval of the tooling including the R class, the AD60, BSV bogie sheep wagons, HUB sets and CHG four wheel guards van.

A long overdue newsletter is currently in preparation and will be available in the next week or so. It will contain more information on the above projects as well as up-dates on currently underway projects such as the 38 class re-run, steel sided LCH and RH four wheel hoppers, TAM 12 wheeler and 620/720, 600/700 two car diesel and DEB sets.

2018 will be quite a busy year!
12 Wheeler up-date

The 12 wheeler shipment made up of the MAL sleepers, ACS composite cars and AB dining cars was picked up from Port Botany on the 19th of January and four of the seven pallets which made up the shipment were delivered to the Eureka offices that day. Due to a lack of space three pallets are currently stored at Eureka's cargo clearance facilities until space becomes available at the Eureka offices later this week (around the 1st of February).
These three pallets include all the spare bogies and under-frames so these will not be available until around the 1st of February. They will only be available through the Eureka Office.
By the 1st of February all of the orders for the carriages will have been packed and posted. Any orders not received by that date should be followed up at the Eureka offices.
Concurrent with the post out, stock is also being delivered to retailers. Demand has been such that some retailers are already on their second and third re-orders.
The release of the Eureka MAL, ACS and AB cars has sent many of us back to the archives to locate evidence of their rostering at various periods.
The rostering of the ACS cars because of the nature of the cars (the ACS is fact a complete train in one carriage) is quite interesting and as an example is reproduced here for the year 1964.
The MV Cosco Rotterdam is due in ShangHai in the next few days to load cargo bound for Australia. This cargo will include the balance of Eureka's 40 class production run which is predominantly the "with sound" units together with the "non-sound" units not forwarded previously by air.
The Cosco Rotterdam is expected to sail from ShangHai on the 13th of October and is due in Port Botany on Thursday, the 26th of October. This should see the 40 class delivered to Eureka's offices on Monday the 30th of October. Distribution will commence immediately starting with those modellers who have confirmed both the details of their orders and their current address.
Distribution of the non-sound units has reached the half way point. Not all engine numbers were received in the first shipment so the complete distribution of non-sound units will have to wait until the sea shipment is received at the end of October..

Assembly of the 40 class at the factory is almost complete. Unfortunately, anything sent by sea now would not arrive in time for the Liverpool Exhibition. To have at least something for the exhibition, the above pallet of non-sound 40 class has been forwarded by air and is due to arrive at Kingsford Smith on Monday the 18th of September. They should be cleared through Customs by the end of that week.
Distribution will start immediately but there will be a good number of units available at Liverpool.
The "with sound" 40 class and the remainder of the non-sound units will be sent by sea and depending on shipping dates should arrive in Port Botany around the 21st of October. Meanwhile back in the Decoration Department.

Whilst the assembly of the 40 class attracted most of the attention on our recent visit, across the corridor in the Decoration Department the 12 wheelers (MAL, ACS and AB) are the centre of activity.
The accompanying photos show two pad printing machines in operation in the Decoration Department printing on Eureka's MAL/ACS/AB carriages.
Photos 1 and 2 show a one colour machine being used to print the belt lines on a 12 wheeler. In photo 1 the locating inner can be seen. In photo 2 the operator places a carriage body onto the inner, presses the operating pedal and the printer head through a process that I do not fully understand, picks up the ink and locates it precisely as required on the side of the carriage body.

Photo 3

Photo 3 is interesting for several reasons. This machine is a three colour machine. The carriage body is placed on the locating inner as with the one colour machine. The slide visible at the bottom of the photo then locates the carriage body at the first position where the first colour is applied, then the slide moves to the second position where the second colour is applied and so on to the third position.

Amazing!!!!

The second point of interest (to a Westerner) is that the operator is female. There is very little discrimination in China between men or women as far as employment is concerned. This operator and her male counterpart on the single colour machine are skilled workers and would be earning considerably more than workers on the assembly line. Whilst the eureka staff were at the factory a labour dispute was taking place which when resolved saw both pad printing operators receive increased pay.

The Eureka 12 wheelers have now completed their time in the Decoration Department and are now waiting their time in the Assembly Department. September is expected to see this happen and so delivery of the 12 wheelers should take place in late October/early November.

Spare complete chassis's and more spare six wheel bogies will also come with that delivery.

The pre-delivery price is now finished. The price for the MAL/ACS/AB carriages is $150 per car.
